thong sandals hurt. how do people manage wearing them?

I know people that wear them. I just bought a pair today and the pain between my toes hurts really bad.
I had to walk slow too.
Is there a trick to it? I want to wear these to the beach and bonfire on Saturday but I cant have my feet in pain. Help?
