Eve, Cleopatra and our ancient sisters mostly walked barefoot. Their naked feet became the sole protection from their many wanderings and ordeals. Then not too long ago when animal skins and furs were used as foot coverings. It was then said that the lowly sandals, were the forerunners of some of our modern day shoes.

Women from the Baroque and Renaissance languished with those delicate slippers and shoes with intricate heels to move in and about a society ruled by men. These long gowns covered their unique taste in footwear.

Then fast forward to the not-so-distant future, where women's footwear under the era where long gowns were worn are usually those of soft slippers designed and furnished from delicate fabrics such as the brocade, the silk, or embroidered leather. From the inception of the soft slippers came the patten, which is an overshoe with a wooden sole, usually made of aspen with an open leather vamp. It was usually tied with latchets onto the foot over the shoe. The patten then became a fashionable accessory in the previous century and can still be seen today as a form of a necessity.

With the patten also came the chopine. A chopine is a footwear with a raised sole introduced in Europe. It was popular among the courtesans of Venice. The popularity of chopine quickly spread to the rest of Europe especially in Italy and Spain. These shoes were on a raised platform giving height to the wearer, but then its popularity slowly diminished at the turn of the century.

The evolution of foot coverings, from the lowly sandals to the present day running shoes, ballerina flats, and stilettos are more or less, marvels of creative engineering and unrelenting innovation, which continues even today as we find new materials to cover our feet.

And as one examines footwear history, both in the West and in other parts of the world, though most shoemakers of the past never would have dreamed or imagined that a pair of Moccasin sandals, the patten or chopine would become the ultimate design for its modern day counterparts.

Any fashionista then and now knows that a shoe is not just an accessory... In fact, with the right pair, it can be the whole outfit. Like Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City, shoes are the ultimate necessity when you want to look fabulous for any event. A pair of high heels can easily make you feel sexy and confident. Ballet flats make you feel so graceful it's like you're floating on air. Wedges are always casual and fun. Shoes represent the individuality of a person as they can be customized and chosen well to fit someone's taste.

So Eve, our too many ancient sisters, Cleopatra, the complex and feisty women of the Baroque and Renaissance period can peacefully rest knowing that their contemporary counterparts moved with ease to the same ordeal that they have been through with decent garment covering their once dainty and naked feet.
