Tattoo professionals have only three tools of the trade that are very important: tattoo machines, ink and skill of the artist. Sometimes the skill of the artist can be replaced by the use of transfer paper but ink and the tattoo machines are indispensable in permanent tattoos.

In industrialized countries like the United States, London and Japan tattoos are being made with the aid of tattoo machines. The primary function of these tattoo machines is to insert the inks into the skin. The repeated motion of inserting ink is through the presence of electromagnetic coils. Tattoo machines are handheld. This allows the artist to draw a very fine pattern onto the skin.

Thomas Edison who is the inventor of the light bulb also invented the first prototype of tattoo machine. It was called stencil pens. It is similar to the modern day puncher which punches several holes on the paper corresponding to a particular design. This punched paper then is laid flat on a surface and then colored powder is dusted over the paper. This works like a transfer paper. The design of the punched paper can be transferred to any surface.

After fifteen years, the stencil pen was modified and patented by Samuel O'Reilly. His improvement on the stencil pens includes a tube assembly, an ink chamber, a needle and a switch to turn the device on and off. This new machine also has the ability to adjust strokes.

Today's tattoo machine is similar to the machine patented by Percy Waters in 1929. His design has two electromagnetic machines that are parallel. It is comparatively safer because it has a spark shield and the switch is much easier. Since then, several others have made various improvements on this machine refined by Percy Waters but it has essentially stayed the same over the years.

It was in 1979 that another patent for a tattoo machine was issued to Carol Nightingale. His contribution to the evolution of the tattoo machine is the different spring mechanism which allows for detailed work. He also added a lever to adjust the coils. The current tattoo machine has come a long way since then. Today, it is able to have control measures for the speed and depth which allows it to have the exact pressure. Tattoo machines continue to evolve today since tattoo artists keep on adding their own improvements even without patenting it. Truly, tattooing has now become a precise art form
