The Detroit Lions will play their 79th season in 2008 and will be attempting to improve their 2007 record of 7-9. Say what you will about the Lions being as close to the Super Bowl as Lem Barney is to making a comeback, the team actually has improved since 2006, when they finished 3-13. It's been eight years since the Lions have reached the post season playoffs and their time for success is long overdue. A glimpse into the Lions' future will involve taking a closer look at their drafting results.

The first round pick for the Lions was tackle Gosder Cherilus of Boston College. Linebacker Jordon Dizon from Colorado was next chosen followed by running back Kevin Smith of the University of Central Florida. Defensive tackle Andre Fluellen from Florida State was drafted next, followed by defensive end Cliff Avril from Purdue and wide receiver Kenneth Moore from Wake Forest. Rounding out the list was fullback Jerome Felton from Furman, defensive tackle Landon Cohen from Ohio and Caleb Campbell playing as a safety. Campbell is a special case, as he comes not from a college but from the U.S. Army. The Army has a policy that states that military academy graduates can still play for the NFL and delay their army service.

What has been the reaction to the Detroit Lions 2008 Draft? It was assumed that the Lions would choose a tackle, though some experts questioned the logic of passing over Rashard Mendenhall, Felix Jones and Jeff Otah in order to pick Cherilus. Cherilus has been known to struggle in pass protection, which isn't an encouraging sign. Because Cherilus plays as a right tackle, it's likely that his performance won't make or break the team. Dizon has received good attention from the press and could be a starter in the near future, though some critics wonder why he was chosen so early. Kevin Smith has been met with some hesitation, since he needs more strength (he's been described as lanky and thin) and development, and yet the Lions traded up to draft him early on to avoid losing him to the Rams. Fluellen and Kenneth Moore also met with their share of criticism.

If there's one pick that everyone can agree on it's Cliff Avril, who has consistently played well in the pass rusher position and may now be the team's feature pass rusher. Jerome Felton came out of nowhere but has received some favorable attention as he is a full back who has the ability to get 5-10 rushes a game in short yardage. Finally, there's Campbell, the army man, somewhat high on character if limited in ability. He may be able to contribute on special teams at some point.

Experts point out that the biggest problem for the team continues to be pass defense. What can you expect of the Detroit Lions in 2008? The team continues to struggle for success, though to coach Rod Marinelli's credit things are looking up from one year ago. It depends on a well planned strategy-and one that apparently doesn't require pass defense.
