There is nothing worse than going down to your basement on a rainy day and finding your furniture floating. Unexpected flooding creates heartache and frustration, not to mention loss of personal property.
But one piece of equipment can bring some sense of relief to this annual stress: the sump pump.
Many homeowners in rain-drenched regions of the country have come to rely on their sump pumps during the fall and spring seasons, when overflowing rivers, melting snow and rainfall are at their highest levels. People who live in subtropical regions may also have flooding problems due to hurricane backlashes.
For those new to the need of a sump pump, there are two basic kinds: pedestal and submersible. The pedestal version, which looks like a long stick with a bulbous head, is less expensive and tends to last longer than the submersible units. While the units range in horsepower from 1/6 to 1/2, the most important factor is the number of gallons per minute (GPM) that the pump will disperse. Price will play a big factor in the efficiency of sump pumps. In most cases, the least expensive model will be less effective in removing water from the basement of your home.
There are several manual or automatic units on the market. The manual style can be less expensive, but not as convenient to use. One major benefit of an automatic unit is having it activate if you are not home when moisture gets into your basement.
D.I.Y or get a professional to install?
If you are handy with home renovations, you may be able to handle installing a sump pump yourself. If not, it may be wise to get assistance from someone who is familiar with plumbing. There are a number of steps involved, so this will ensure your sump pump will operate properly when needed. When in doubt, call a local professional to keep your basement dry year round.
When installing a sump pump, plug the system directly into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GGCI) outlet. While most units sold in the U.S. can operate using a standard 110-volt circuit, for safety reasons, it is not recommended to use extension cords at any time.
Another important factor is maintenance. Examine both the sump tank and the sump pump annually, or more often if your home is in a high water table region or has extreme weather conditions. To increase the unit's ability to perform correctly, remove signs of gravel, dirt and general debris. This will also extend the life of the pump.
