A huge percentage of our time is spent at work and the power we portray will have a direct result on our networking abilities. They say that 50% - 75% of communication is of the non-verbal variety which means that the rest is visual with what we wear playing a major role. Also when you walk into the door of an interview, 50 per cent of the employer's mind will already be made up. So we can now see that good clothes not only open doors but also bad choices can shut them too!
It could be said that it is a lot easier for men to know what to wear as they have a uniform, namely the suit. However, for woman it's much more tricky as the age of 80's power dressing is over and wearing a suit dated! We have an array of items to choose from, so which dresses, shirts, skirts, tops should we wear exactly and what do we avoid? Well the trick is to take yourself seriously, the work environment is not the place to try a new trend or dress inappropriately as you will feel conscious and this will affect performance. Earlier this year Maureen Rice, editor of Psychologies magazine, complained that she was sick of seeing woman turning up for work with bra straps showing, 'spray on' dresses and loads of cleavage!
So the advise is to be minimalist lots of black, white, navy and muted colors. You can get away with more adventurous shades like purple and green as long as they are in deep hues. Also remember to give the aura of power so strict lines are good and can be balanced with soft scarves and smart boleros/shrugs or shawls to look trendy. Also remember that good fit is imperative to look tidy and functional. A garment that is too tight will look rather floozy and over-sized can work but is too casual for the office. Another key point is to be comfortable, pencil skirts look great but can sometimes slow you down and you can be constantly fiddling with them, so an A-line, maxi or trumpet style can mean less hassle. The rule is not too short, not too long and certainly not too complicated! Simply: simple good style is best and can be transformational and empowering.
