Help in question about my broken toe and about this shoe i have to wear?

Hi, about a week ago I broke by toe. I smashed it while wakeboarding. The doctor told me to wear this stupid shoe/sandal thing. I hate the shoe but don't want to damage the toe anymore. My question is how long do I need to wear the shoe? I work retail so there's no way of staying off my feet, I'm on them about 8 hours a day.
