What is the best fabric to sew a casual men's coat with?

I am preparing to sew a casual coat for my boyfriend. He requests a canvassy type fabric that is thick but not heavy, and that resembles denim in texture but is not actually denim. I would like to know either what he is talking about (I am thinking a heavy cotton fabric) or what other type of fabric is good for a casual fall coat. We live in Georgia so it doesnt have to be too thick or insulating. Thanks!

Go to your nearest fabric store, not the fabric section in Wal-Mart, a real fabric store, and ask one of the clerks to help you. They will know what you need and show you right where it is at in the store. You should have at least a dozen colors/patterns to choose from.
