Beeswax is a well established material in our lives since ancient history. It was used as a preservative for paintings, for embalming dead bodies and even as an anti-rust coating for weapons. Beeswax was highly valued and even used as a currency.
In the past, I have spent some time working with bees and beekeepers. Therefore I have developed a special appreciation for beeswax. Candles made of this natural and renewable material have their unique scents and because of that you will hardly find beeswax candles with added fragrance.
Making candles using beeswax is a relatively expensive hobby nowadays because of the price of beeswax. But if you are a candle making enthusiast like me, surely you will pay a little bit more from time to time for this natural wax. There is nothing like the sweet smell of a burning beeswax candle.
Amongst other things, the air we breathe contains polluting particles charged with positive ions. Burning beeswax candles emit negative ions which neutralizes positive ions and cleanses the air. If you wish to contribute to creating a better environment by making your own beeswax candles, here are some interesting and easy to follow ideas:
1) Making candles with beeswax sheets is probably the easiest and the cleanest way. All you need to buy is a sheet (or several sheets) of beeswax and a wick. Lay the sheet flat on an even surface. Cut the wick a bit longer than the sheet and place it on the very edge of the sheet. Start by rolling the edge very tightly around the wick as the wax has to make a contact with the wick. Once you reached the end, gently press your fingers along the edge to seal the end. The body temperature is enough to soften beeswax for easier handling.
2) Making tea light candles using beeswax sheets can be attractive for kids too. Besides the beeswax sheet and wick, you will need cookie cutters. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes of your future tea light candles. You will need to cut out several pieces and layer them. Layers must stick together and that is easily achieved by using a hairdryer to soften the beeswax. Use an ice pick to make a hole for the wick, insert the wick and the candle is ready to use.
3) Making dipping beeswax candles is a bit longer and a "messier" process. Chunks of wax are melted in a double boiler. You will need a length of a wick that is twice the size of your melting pot. Hold the wick in the middle, let it naturally fold in half and start dipping the wick into the melted wax. This way you will create two candles. Wax will stick to the wick forming layers. Dip several times allowing each coating to cool between each dip. Dipping has to be done quickly so already formed coatings don't melt. Candles have to be hung to allow cooling. Make sure you have plenty of newspapers to cover the floor because the wax will
drip.
So you see, it is easy to make your own beeswax candle and your reward is its unique, sweet smell.
